LOHN AVIATION · FLIGHT PROCEDURES
Flight Validation & Procedure Development:
from concept to flight operations.
Lohn Aviation coordinates the development and validation of flight procedures and conducts the associated validation flights. Together with specialist partners, we bring together procedure design, operational assessment and flight execution, with clearly defined responsibilities and traceable documentation.
PROCEDURES. OPERATIONS. RESPONSIBILITY.
One point of contact for your procedure project.
A flight procedure must suit its intended operation. Lohn Aviation facilitates coordination between the client, procedure designer, validation team and other project stakeholders. Technical procedure development is carried out by the appointed specialist partners. Lohn Aviation conducts the associated validation flights. Responsibilities and scope are agreed for each project.
For airports, aerodrome operators, aircraft operators and other organisations seeking to develop a new procedure or review an existing one.
DEFINING YOUR PROJECT
What needs to be developed or assessed?
Instrument flight procedures
Development and review of an instrument flight procedure, with agreed requirements for design, operational assessment and validation.
FMS-coded visual flight tracks
Flight track development for visual manoeuvres, such as RNP (VPT) or Company RNP Circling. The flight path, FMS coding and integration into flight operations are considered together.
These are distinct tasks and are assessed separately at the start of the project. The appropriate specialist partner and required supporting evidence depend on the specific assignment.
PROCEDURE DEVELOPMENT
Procedure development starts with a clear brief.
We structure the requirements, coordinate the stakeholders and support the handovers between development, assessment and operational implementation.
Project brief & source data
Which location, procedure and operational use are in scope? Existing documentation, information gaps and responsibilities are identified together.
Design & interfaces
The appointed specialist partners deliver the technical work. Lohn Aviation coordinates discussions, changes, milestones and the handover of agreed deliverables.
FLIGHT VALIDATION
A documented assessment of flyability.
Flight validation assesses a flight procedure from an operational perspective. An agreed validation plan defines the checks and supporting evidence required for the specific project.
Operational assessment
Technical analysis of the procedure and preparation for validation before any flight-based assessment.
Simulator or aircraft
Depending on the project, validation flights in a suitable simulator or aircraft may form part of the agreed assessment programme.
Results & findings
Documentation of findings, recommendations and conclusions. Additional flight track visualisations or video analysis can be included by agreement.
Next steps
Outstanding issues, responsibilities and follow-up actions are agreed with the stakeholders and tracked through to the agreed handover.
FLIGHT TRACK DEVELOPMENT
Connecting the flight path with the operation.
For FMS-coded visual flight tracks, the project extends beyond the trajectory. SOPs, operational documentation, charting requirements, pilot training and ongoing quality control may form part of implementation.
Lohn Aviation coordinates these work packages as required with the operator and appointed specialist partners. The scope is agreed before work begins.
HOW WE WORK
From the first question to a structured handover.
Define the project
Identify the objective, location, procedure type, stakeholders, source documentation and intended timeline.
Engage specialist partners
Agree the scope, suitability, responsibilities and interfaces for development and validation.
Coordinate delivery
Support milestones, information flow and changes across the project team.
Hand over the results
Bring together the agreed documentation, outstanding issues and next steps in a traceable handover.
CLEAR RESPONSIBILITIES
Project coordination and validation flights through one point of contact.
Lohn Aviation coordinates the project and conducts the associated validation flights. Technical procedure development and other specialist services are delivered by the appointed partners. The assessment programme, responsibilities and documentation are agreed for each project before work begins.
ICAO Doc 9906, Volume 5, provides a technical reference for the validation of instrument flight procedures. National requirements are coordinated with the relevant stakeholders. Conducting validation flights does not replace any required regulatory decision, which remains the responsibility of the competent authority.
GOOD TO KNOW
Questions about Flight Validation & Procedure Development.
What is flight validation?
Flight validation is the operational assessment of a flight procedure. Depending on the scope, it includes preparatory analysis and assessments in a simulator or aircraft. The results are documented.
What is procedure development?
Procedure development is the design of a flight procedure. The procedure type, requirements, source data and responsibilities are defined at the outset. Development and validation are separate stages.
What role does Lohn Aviation play?
Lohn Aviation coordinates the project and the interfaces between the client and specialist partners and conducts the associated validation flights. Technical procedure development and other commissioned specialist services are performed by the respective specialists.
Does every procedure require validation in an aircraft?
The required assessment scope is defined in the validation plan for the specific procedure. The use of a simulator, an aircraft or a combination is agreed for each project.
What information is needed for an enquiry?
Useful information includes the location, intended procedure type, project objective, available documentation, participating organisations and target timeline. Open questions can also provide the starting point for an initial discussion.
Does validation constitute regulatory approval?
Validation and regulatory approval are separate steps. The necessary supporting evidence, responsibilities and subsequent steps are agreed for the project.
