Private Jet Charter Guide: Cost, Aircraft Choice, Booking & Operations
Private jet charter means booking an entire aircraft for an individually planned mission. The route, departure time, airport, cabin, baggage and service are matched to the actual requirement. The price normally applies to the aircraft rather than to an individual seat.
This guide explains how private jet charter works, which aircraft class suits which journey, what determines the cost, which details are required for a reliable quotation and what happens operationally between the first enquiry and landing.
Lohn Aviation Executive plans, coordinates and operates private jet flights for private individuals, companies, family offices, delegations and institutional clients. Missions use our own or directly managed capacity, complemented where required by selected international partners.
Private jet charter, clearly explained
A private flight does not begin with a particular aircraft model. It begins with the mission. The decisive factors are route, date, preferred departure time, number of guests, baggage, pets, preferred airports, cabin requirements and the flexibility the journey demands.
Lohn Aviation translates this travel profile into an operational solution. This includes selecting a suitable aircraft class, checking actual availability, coordinating the crew and operating carrier, and assessing slots, permits, handling, weather, range and airport opening hours.
The result is not a search for the largest or best-known jet. It is a reliable balance of safety, availability, comfort, total journey time and cost.
In brief
- You normally charter the entire aircraft, not an individual seat.
- The lowest-priced jet is not automatically the most economical overall solution.
- Range, passenger count and baggage must be assessed together.
- A regional airport closer to the destination may substantially reduce door-to-door time.
- The actual price reflects the aircraft, flight time, positioning, airports, crew and additional services.
- The specific aircraft and responsible operating carrier are confirmed before the mission.
For an initial quotation, the route, date, number of guests and any special requirements are usually sufficient.
Booking a private jet: the seven key decisions
1. What exactly do you book when chartering a private jet?
With on-demand charter, an aircraft and crew are provided for a specific journey. Unlike an airline service, the trip is not defined by a published timetable or available seat inventory. It is shaped by the agreed routing and confirmed operational feasibility.
The quotation covers the defined flight mission. Depending on the request, it may include positioning flights, handling, airport charges, crew costs, catering or additional services. Quotations should therefore be compared by aircraft, routing, conditions and scope, not solely by the final figure.
2. Which aircraft class fits the mission?
The right class is determined by the complete mission. Turboprops and light jets can be highly efficient on regional journeys. Midsize and super-midsize jets offer more cabin space and range. Long-range and ultra-long-range jets are designed for intercontinental direct services and demanding long-haul profiles.
Range and seating are only part of the assessment. Baggage volume, loading door, cabin height, runway requirements, weather reserves, crew concept and the actual cabin configuration also matter. The Lohn Aviation Fleet Guide explains individual aircraft and mission profiles in detail.
3. Which airports make sense?
Private flights may use major international airports as well as many business and regional airports. This can reduce ground travel and bring the journey closer to its real origin and destination. The geographically nearest airport is not always the best operational choice.
Runway length and condition, weather, opening hours, customs and immigration, slots, handling, night restrictions, parking and aircraft performance must all be assessed. What matters is the realistic door-to-door solution, not simply the distance shown on a map.
4. How many guests, how much baggage and which special requirements?
Passenger count and baggage affect aircraft selection, range and payload. Suitcases, skis, golf bags, bicycles, musical instruments, sample cases or medical equipment require sufficient volume, weight capacity and a suitable loading door.
Pets, mobility aids, special catering, security requirements or confidential procedures should be disclosed with the initial enquiry. This allows carriage to be checked and confirmed for the specific aircraft and route before departure.
5. How quickly can a flight be arranged?
Depending on aircraft location, crew availability and route, a private jet can sometimes be arranged for the same day. An instant departure guarantee would nevertheless be unrealistic. Duty times, slots, permits, handling, weather, airport opening hours and positioning determine the true timeframe.
International journeys, immigration requirements, special baggage and complex multi-city routings benefit from additional lead time. After checking the mission, Lohn Aviation provides the earliest realistic departure time.
6. How is the charter price calculated?
Private jet charter has no universal price per kilometre or seat. The calculation considers aircraft type, block time, positioning, market demand, airport and handling fees, navigation, crew, possible overnight stays, de-icing, taxes and any additional services requested.
A one-way journey may require two positioning sectors. A return journey may be more economical if the aircraft and crew can remain at the destination, or more expensive if parking, waiting time and crew accommodation apply. Every mission therefore requires an individual calculation.
7. Who is the responsible operating carrier?
The operating carrier is the air operator responsible for conducting the commercial flight within its approved operating structure. The specific company is confirmed for each mission together with the aircraft and availability.
Lohn Aviation operates private jet missions with its own crews and its own or directly managed capacity, complemented by selected international partners whenever the mission, route or aircraft type requires additional capabilities. Commercial charter flights operate under the AOC of the confirmed operating carrier. NCO and NCC, by contrast, describe non-commercial operating frameworks relevant particularly to ownership and aircraft management.
How much does a private jet flight cost?
The charter price normally applies to the entire aircraft. The number of guests often affects the price less than aircraft class, flight time and positioning. A higher passenger count may nevertheless require a larger aircraft, more baggage capacity or additional range reserves.
| Cost factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Aircraft class | Size, range, fuel consumption, crew and operating costs differ considerably. |
| Block time | The calculation commonly uses the operational time from leaving the departure stand to stopping at the arrival stand. |
| Positioning | The aircraft may have to fly empty to the departure airport or onwards after the mission. |
| Airports & handling | Landing, parking, slot, security and handling charges vary substantially. |
| Crew & waiting time | Duty limits, hotels, transfers or a crew change may be required. |
| Additional services | Catering, de-icing, ground transfers, special permits and individual requests are considered for the mission. |
A reliable quotation therefore states more than a price. It should identify the routing, aircraft, scope, payment and cancellation conditions, and the confirmed operating carrier.
What information makes a quotation reliable?
For an initial assessment, the following details are normally sufficient:
- preferred departure and arrival airport, or the respective cities,
- travel date and preferred time,
- one-way, return or multi-city routing,
- number of adults, children and any animals,
- quantity, type and approximate dimensions of special baggage,
- cabin, catering, transfer, security or support requirements.
The more precise the briefing, the more accurately aircraft, airports and price can be calculated. If details are still missing, Lohn Aviation clarifies them personally during the next stage.
Private aircraft classes compared
Aircraft classes provide initial orientation, not a booking guarantee. Seating, range, baggage capacity and cabin layout vary even within the same class. Suitability is always assessed for the individual aircraft, its actual cabin configuration and the planned mission.
Detailed aircraft profiles and direct comparisons are available in the Fleet Guide. The current fleet overview presents the published Executive portfolio.
For short and regional journeys
Piston aircraft, turboprops, very light jets and light jets can be highly efficient for smaller groups and regional sectors. Many regional airports are closer to the actual destination, and some aircraft can use shorter runways than larger jets.
A turboprop is not automatically the slower total journey. If it reaches a more convenient airport or avoids positioning, door-to-door time may be better. Cabin comfort, weather, range and baggage must still suit the mission.
For larger groups and long-range travel
Midsize and super-midsize jets combine range, speed and cabin comfort for longer European and selected intercontinental routes. Long-range and ultra-long-range jets are designed for global missions, larger parties, more baggage and extended time on board.
For long-haul flights, the assessment includes headwinds, temperature, reserves, alternate airports, payload, crew concept and possible technical stops. Published maximum range is therefore never an automatic guarantee for the actual charter mission.
| Aircraft class | Typical guest count | Typical strengths | Suitable mission profiles |
|---|---|---|---|
| Piston & turboprop | approximately 2–8 | Efficiency, regional airports, flexible runway profiles | Short journeys, islands and smaller groups |
| Very light & light jet | approximately 4–8 | Jet speed with compact economics | Direct European flights and business journeys |
| Midsize jet | approximately 6–9 | More cabin space, baggage capacity and range | Longer European and medium-range journeys |
| Super-midsize jet | approximately 7–10 | Larger cabin and greater nonstop capability | Europe, the Middle East and selected transatlantic profiles |
| Long-range jet | approximately 8–14 | Intercontinental range, large cabin and rest areas | Long-haul journeys, delegations and family travel |
| Ultra-long-range jet | approximately 10–17 | Maximum global nonstop capability and cabin comfort | Very long intercontinental missions |
These are category-level indications. The specific aircraft may differ according to certification and cabin configuration. Range and payload are recalculated for every mission.
From initial enquiry to landing
1. Briefing and mission assessment
The enquiry is assessed as a complete travel profile rather than a route alone. Lohn Aviation clarifies times, airports, guests, baggage, animals, catering, transfers, security requirements and the flexibility needed.
If the exact origin or destination airport is still open, suitable options are compared by accessibility, opening hours, operational feasibility and door-to-door time.
2. Aircraft and operating carrier selection
Suitable capacity from our own or directly managed portfolio is then assessed, complemented where necessary by selected international partners. The decision considers more than model and price: actual availability, cabin configuration, maintenance status, crew, airport approvals and the operating structure required for the mission all matter.
The responsible operating carrier is confirmed for the specific flight rather than assumed in general terms.
3. Quotation and binding confirmation
The quotation describes the planned service: aircraft or aircraft class, routing, timings, price, included services, conditions and special agreements. The mission is scheduled on a binding basis once the quotation has been accepted and confirmed.
For time-critical enquiries, quotation, document checks, payment processing and operational preparation can be handled in parallel with high priority.
4. Operational preparation
Before departure, the operations team coordinates flight planning, slots, handling, permits, weather, fuel, crew duty times and special service requests. Passenger information and required travel documents are protected and processed only within the necessary operational framework.
If weather, airport status or the itinerary changes, alternatives are assessed and coordinated with the client.
5. Flight operation and personal support
On the day of travel, Lohn Aviation monitors the mission operationally and remains the central point of contact. Guests receive the confirmed departure details and can normally arrive substantially closer to departure than for an airline flight, subject to airport, handling and immigration requirements.
Ground transfers, accommodation, catering, yachts, security services and further requests can be coordinated individually on the client’s behalf. They are not offered by Lohn Aviation as a package travel arrangement.
Charter models and alternatives
On-demand charter
On-demand charter is the most flexible solution for individual or irregular journeys. Aircraft and operator are selected for each mission, allowing capacity to be matched to the route, guests, baggage and schedule.
This model is particularly suitable when travel profiles vary or no long-term commitment is required.
Empty leg
An empty leg is a positioning flight that already has to take place and on which spare capacity is offered. The price may be attractive, but route, timing and aircraft are considerably less flexible than with a regular charter.
Empty legs may change or disappear if the underlying primary mission changes. They are an opportunity, not a reliable substitute for a firmly planned charter flight.
Jet cards, block charter and longer-term solutions
Jet cards and block charter programmes bundle pre-agreed flight hours or services. They can simplify processes and budgeting, but often limit aircraft classes, regions, notice periods or peak-day availability.
For regular demand, a dedicated longer-term solution may also be appropriate. Contract terms and actual usage should be compared rather than advertised hourly rates alone.
Aircraft ownership with aircraft management
For very frequent use, an owned or long-term dedicated aircraft can provide greater control over the cabin, crew, availability and personal procedures. It also introduces capital commitment, fixed costs and responsibility for maintenance, crew and management.
Lohn Aviation provides aircraft management covering analysis, acquisition support, operating concept, crew, maintenance, cost control and, where appropriate and requested, charter integration.
Private jet charter glossary
AOC: Air Operator Certificate. It authorises an operator to conduct the commercial air transport operations specified within its approval.
Operating carrier: The air operator responsible for conducting the specific flight within its approved operating structure.
Block time: Operational time from leaving the departure stand until coming to a stop at the arrival stand.
Positioning: Moving an aircraft to the departure airport or onwards to its next assignment, often without paying guests.
Slot: An allocated time relating to an airport or air traffic flow. Not every airport and mission requires the same type of slot.
NCC/NCO: European frameworks for non-commercial operations with complex and non-complex aircraft. They are distinct from commercial charter under an AOC.
Frequently asked questions about private jet charter
Is private jet charter priced per seat or per aircraft?
The entire aircraft is normally chartered for the confirmed mission. The price is therefore not simply multiplied by the number of guests. Passenger count may nevertheless determine the required aircraft size, range and baggage capacity.
What information does Lohn Aviation need for a charter quotation?
Initially, we need the route or cities, travel date, preferred timings, number of guests and details of baggage, pets or special requirements. The necessary passenger and travel information is added for a binding booking.
How quickly can a private jet be arranged?
Depending on aircraft location, crew, slots, permits, handling and airport opening hours, a solution can sometimes be arranged for the same day. Lohn Aviation provides the earliest realistic departure time after an operational assessment.
Can I select a particular aircraft model?
Yes. A preferred model can be checked specifically. The individual aircraft, its cabin configuration, current availability and responsible operating carrier are nevertheless confirmed for the actual mission. It is often sensible to provide equivalent alternatives as well.
Can a private jet use any airport?
No. Runway length and strength, weather, opening hours, customs, slots, handling, noise restrictions and aircraft performance must be suitable. Lohn Aviation therefore assesses the best airport for the complete door-to-door journey.
Can I bring skis, golf bags, bicycles or other special baggage?
Often, yes. Weight, shape, baggage compartment and loading door of the specific aircraft are decisive. Special items should be included in the enquiry with dimensions and quantity so that carriage can be confirmed before departure.
May pets travel in the cabin?
Pets can travel in the cabin on many private jet missions. The operating carrier’s rules and the immigration, health and documentation requirements of the countries involved apply. Species, size and weight should be provided early.
Can catering, transfers and accommodation be arranged?
Yes. Lohn Aviation can coordinate catering, chauffeur transfers, accommodation, yachts, security services and further requests individually. These services are arranged separately on the client’s behalf and are not offered as a package travel arrangement.
What happens if my departure time changes?
Timing changes are often possible, but must be coordinated with the aircraft, crew duty limits, slots, permits, handling and airport opening hours. The earlier a change is known, the greater the operational flexibility.
Which additional costs may arise after booking?
Possible variable items include de-icing, unplanned waiting time, additional airport charges, routing changes or services ordered later. The specific quotation defines what is included and how variable events are handled.
Who operates the booked private jet flight?
The confirmed operating carrier is responsible for conducting the commercial flight within its approved AOC structure. Lohn Aviation confirms the specific aircraft, availability and operating carrier for every mission.
How does Lohn Aviation assess aircraft and operators?
The relevant operator, aircraft, crew and mission information is assessed for the assignment. This includes the required commercial operating structure, availability, technical and operational suitability, and the feasibility of the planned route.
